Exploring daylight at home with ELLE Decoration

3 min read

Daylight is more than just illumination—it enhances well-being, creativity, and connection. VELUX has long championed natural light, ensuring homes embrace its benefits. Following ELLE Decoration International’s inspiring conversation, we continue exploring how daylight shapes our living spaces and daily lives.

Shaping spaces with daylight: The VELUX and ELLE Decoration partnership

ELLE Decoration International is a leading voice in design and lifestyle, celebrating creativity and innovation in interiors. At the forefront is Monique Van Der Reijden, Creative Director of ELLE Decoration Netherlands, who is passionate about the role of daylight in shaping modern living spaces.

“Natural light is the healthiest thing you can have. It isn’t just something we see. It’s something we feel. It inspires, connects and transforms us.”

In collaboration with VELUX, ELLE Decoration gathered eight international design talents for a special event in Amsterdam, where they engaged in a thought-provoking conversation about the transformative role of daylight and roof windows in architecture.

Why daylight matters

Daylight is more than just illumination—it is a fundamental contributor to our health and happiness. Studies have shown that exposure to natural light can improve mood, enhance productivity, and regulate sleep cycles1.

“Daylight is life. Just look at how sad and tired we feel in winter without it,” affirms Laetitia Renevier, journalist of ELLE Decoration France, underlining the deep emotional connection we have with natural light. Daphne Dorgelo, journalist and editor for ELLE Belgium, reinforces this sentiment: “Daylight literally brings energy,” she says, emphasising its revitalising effect on both our spaces and our well-being.

Daylight and architecture

The integration of daylight into architectural design has the power to transform a home. It enhances spatial perception, highlights textures, and fosters a deeper connection to the outdoors.

“Natural light makes a room more aesthetic, spacious and inviting.”

VELUX roof windows  play a pivotal role in harnessing daylight, creating homes that breathe and evolve with natural rhythms. Whether it’s a sun-drenched reading nook or a well-lit workspace, roof windows help redefine how we experience our interiors.

“Natural daylight from roof windows can make a room feel brighter, bigger, and more spectacular for sure ,” adds Anna Chwalinska, Editor-in-Chief of ELLE Decoration Polska, emphasising its impact on spatial perception.

As highlighted by the design talents, the rhythmic placement of roof windows in the Factory House demonstrated how daylight can be both a striking architectural feature and a functional improvement. “I think that adding roof windows to a property is a very interesting and dynamic way to introduce natural light into a space,” concludes Miminat Shodeinde, Founder of Miminat Designs, reinforcing how roof windows enhance both design and well-being.

Enhancing well-being through design

Beyond aesthetics, VELUX roof window solutions contribute to a more comfortable indoor environment. Thoughtfully placed roof windows support natural ventilation, allowing fresh air to circulate and helping to maintain a pleasant indoor climate. By reducing the build-up of humidity and stale air, they can create a more refreshing and inviting living space.

With VELUX ACTIVE with NETATMO , smart sensors automatically regulate air quality and temperature, ensuring comfort throughout the seasons. Accessories such as the VELUX anti-heat blackout shutter  offer further temperature control, providing shade and indoor comfort when needed, especially during spring and summer.
